About the Event:

Welcoming Week is a time to celebrate the welcoming values that make our Queenstown community strong and inclusive to all who join it. In this instalment of the International Storytellers Film Series, we aim to bring these values to life by showcasing films that highlight the diverse stories of migrants and their perspectives, throughout the World. This month, in honour of Welcoming Week, we are proud to present "Lucky Grandma," a dark comedy that explores immigrant life, the vulnerabilities of aging, and unexpected friendships.

To enhance the sense of community and connection, this month we will be offering FREE SOUP and encourage guests to bring along a dish or anything they would like to share with their fellow viewers. While it is not required to bring a dish, this shared potluck creates an opportunity for connection and welcoming conversation over shared kai (food).

About the Film:

Set in the heart of Chinatown, New York, "Lucky Grandma" tells the story of an ornery, chain-smoking, newly widowed 80-year-old Grandma (Tsai Chin) who is eager to live life as an independent woman despite her family's worries. After a fortune teller predicts a most auspicious day, Grandma heads to the casino and goes all in, only to land herself on the wrong side of luck. Suddenly attracting the attention of some Chinese gangsters, she employs a bodyguard from a rival gang and finds herself in the middle of a Chinatown gang war.
