This November, we had the privilege of hosting an informative and engaging session for the Tongan youth in our community, alongside the Queenstown Police, led by the insightful Amanda Chute. This event was held with the goal of providing valuable information to both the young people and their families, helping them navigate the norms, rules, and rights of living in Queenstown.
A Session for the Whole Family
The event was attended by three local Tongan families, along with their children, making it a truly family-oriented gathering. In total, 12 tamariki and rangatahi participated, engaging in a meaningful dialogue that covered a range of important topics. Amanda Chute, the Community Constable of the Queenstown Police, delivered a talk that was both enlightening and supportive, offering practical advice and addressing any questions the youth had about living in the area.
Understanding Life in Queenstown: Rules, Rights, and Support
Amanda's presentation focused on the key expectations of life in Queenstown, covering essential topics like the local rules, rights, and how to navigate the complexities of daily life in a new environment.
The session was designed not only to educate but to also empower the attending youth by helping them understand the rights they have in their community and the support services available to them.
One of the key takeaways from Amanda’s talk was the importance of understanding the balance between respecting local laws and knowing one's rights as a resident. This is especially valuable for young people who may find themselves facing challenging situations and might not always know where to turn for support.
Fostering a Supportive Environment
Through this session, the young attendees gained more than just knowledge about rules and regulations—they also learned that they have a community that cares about their well-being. The event was a great reminder that the youth in Queenstown are not alone, and that there are resources in place to guide and support them as they navigate life in this beautiful yet sometimes challenging town.
Moving Forward Together
As a community, we are committed to continuing to provide spaces for learning, sharing, and support. We’re grateful for the participation of the Tongan families and the youth who made the effort to attend, as well as the Queenstown Police, especially Amanda Chute, for her dedication to helping our youth.
This session was just one of many steps towards creating a more informed and connected community. We look forward to hosting more initiatives like this and continuing to work with our local youth and families to ensure that they feel confident, supported, and empowered in Queenstown.
We’d like to thank everyone who attended and participated in making this session a success. Stay tuned for more upcoming community-focused events!
