In March, the Kiwi Kit Community Trust took a significant step towards supporting our migrant youth by partnering with the Queenstown Police for a powerful meeting.
Recognising the unique challenges faced by young migrants in adapting to new environments and cultural norms, this collaboration aimed to offer our Fijian community valuable insights into New Zealand's laws and social norms.
The event, held at St Johns, was designed to provide a supportive space where Fijian youth could learn about legal rights, responsibilities, and the societal expectations of their new home. Experts from the police force, along with community leaders, facilitated interactive sessions that included Q&A opportunities, practical advice, and shared personal stories to enhance understanding and connection.
The positive feedback from participants highlighted the session's impact, noting a newfound confidence in navigating daily life in Queenstown and an increased sense of security. Parents and caregivers expressed gratitude for the initiative, acknowledging the importance of such knowledge in ensuring their children's successful integration into Kiwi society.
Buoyed by the success of this event, the Kiwi Kit Community Trust is motivated to extend and replicate this initiative to other migrant groups in our community. We believe that empowering youth with this essential knowledge is a crucial step in fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all our new residents.
If you are interested in organising a similar event for your community or want to contribute in any way, please get in touch with us. Together, we can make a substantial difference in the lives of our young people, helping them feel more connected and secure in their new home.
